Exploration

I’m not that attached to the framework that is Brookline and I have already spent one project whinnying about the lunch lines, only to realize they were not that bad. What I am really interested in, is people. I feel like public speaking is a lot about people as they are the public. Understanding the thought process of the people will allow me to knock out that ethos in a more refined way. (hey it might even help you, but once again I state I have no clue what I’m doing) I have figured out that I definitely want to do something about the people who inhabit Brookline. Maybe the term I’m looking for is anthropology? The Wikipedia article did not give me much, so it seems like I will have to a lot more reading. I’m not even sure what I’m looking for in this reading but hopefully I will know when I find it. Thus the name “Stumbling Through Social Psychology.”

This video is part of the catalyst for the project (it is really interesting, but its 10 minutes long): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3oIiH7BLmg

Clearly these are hardcore professors at top universities in the world, but I’m going to try to do some type of recreation of the experiments they did. Right now it seems like I want to understand how people work and see how people in Brookline, specifically, think. Time orientation and pace of life would be a few aspects of this profile(those were in the video, if you did not watch it). There are correlations between certain trends like fast pace of life and high risk of heart attacks, slow pace of life and higher helpfulness. These could play into whatever I do too.

Right now it looks like I just want to do a lot of reading of social psychology, people watching and experiments to see how Brookline stacks up to other cities. I also know some people who are studying sociology and anthropology that I plan to interview to figure some more stuff out. I have not really identified a problem or issues could be. However I’m hoping that becomes more apparent as time goes on.

(I’m also 80 pages into my first book and it has been really cool, but more on that in my next post.)

  1. Your excitement is all that matters at this point. If you've been motivated to race ahead in the reading, that's a great sign. I'm not sure what the heck you're thinking about at this point, but that's fine; I certainly trust your instincts. As you start to get a clearer sense of what you're interested in, come by and we can talk it over.
